Use of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)

2019-12-04

Polymethyl methacrylate is commonly abbreviated as PMMA, which has the advantages of high transparency, low price, and excellent mechanical processability. It is a substitute for frequently used common glass.

PMMA is an important thermoplastic developed earlier. It has high transparency, great stability and all-weather tolerance. It is easy to dye, easy to process and is beautiful. It has a wide range of applications in the construction industry.

For construction: PMMA is mainly used in daylighting, roofing, stair and indoor wall guard board. Recent years have witnessed the rapid applications into lighting shades and automotive lighting on highways and high-end roads. With the increasing construction of restaurants, hotels, and high-end residential buildings in large cities, the daylighting business has developed rapidly. The daylighting made of PMMA extrusion plate has the characteristics of high structural strength, light weight, high light transmittance and good safety performance. Compared with inorganic glass lighting devices, it has great advantages.

For sanitary ware: PMMA can be used to make bathtubs, washbasins, dressing tables and other products. The PMMA bathtub has been widely used in recent years due to its luxurious appearance, easy cleaning, high strength, light weight and use comfort.

At present, the United States and Japan have made mandatory provisions that the kindergartens, primary and senior high schools shall use PMMA in buildings. With the continuous improvement of the domestic laws, it is expected that corresponding regulations will be made in the near future. At the same time, all parts of China have accelerated the pace of urban construction. Street signs, advertising lightboxes and telephone booths made of PMMA will also appear in large quantities. Therefore, there is huge potential for PMMA business to develop!
