1. High transparency. Acrylic (called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) hereinafter) is currently the most excellent polymer apparent material, with 92% light transmittance which is higher than that of glass. The tube of the sunlight lamp which is called “Artificial Sun” is made of quartz because the quartz is completely transparent to ultraviolet light. By contrast, the ordinary glass can only pass 0.6% of ultraviolet light, while the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) can pass 73%.
2. High mechanical strength. The relative molecular weight of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is about 2 million. It is a long-chain polymer compound, and the molecular chain is very soft. Therefore, the strength of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is relatively high, and the tensile and impact resistance is 7-18 times higher than that of ordinary glass. There is a heated and stretched polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) in which the molecular chain segments are arranged in a very orderly manner, resulting in a significant increase in the toughness of the material. No cracks occur on this material even if a nail is nailed into it. This kind of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) will not break into pieces after being broken by bullets. Therefore, the stretched polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) can be used as a bulletproof glass and also as a canopy on a military aircraft.
3. Lightweight. The polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has a density of 1.18 kg/dm3. Under the same size, its weight is only half of that of ordinary glass and 43% of aluminum which is a light metal.
