Acrylic lettering is classified according to their styling. Mainly there are three standard titles: A) Pinggu, B) Jiangu, and C) Yuangu. Other kinds of lettering are basically evolved from these three types. For example, the “Jiangu” can change into “Lingxing”, and the “Yuangu” can be “Huxing”. Their differences lie in the use of cutters and the depth of cutting. (Note: The said “Pinggu”, “Jiangu”, “Yuangu”, “Lingxing”, and “Huxing” are Chinese Pinyin. They refer to different shapes of lettering.)
A) “Pinggu”: Draw the wanted letters on the density board with copy paper, leaving 5cm on each side. Install the straight knife into the manual engraving machine and mold along the outer line of the letters (interior lines for the internal and exterior lines for others). When the mold is made, use a file to flatten the mold. Then use a file and sandpaper to grind the sides and corners of matched molds of the letters into an arc shape. Be sure that it is smooth and even. Finally use the sandpaper to grind it to be smooth. A computerized engraving machine can be used. This only requires an appropriate height and the processing with high angle.
B) “Jiangu”: The first step is similar to that of “Pinggu” making. The difference is that each side and corner should not be ground to be an arc shape at the moment. The second step is heightening and molding. According to the size of the letter and the width of the stroke (in the widest stroke, draw a middle line from the second layer to see whether the slope of the two sides is a 90 degree right angle, use this angle to locate the height), choose the appropriate 45 degree angled knife and place it on the multi-function milling machine, and put the letter face down to make “Jiangu”. Use 502 glue or three-second glue to drop the glue on the sharp part to make it hard and avoid damages of the mold when pressed. Regarding those not sharp, the heightening, or the repair should be considered. If it is extra big letter and no tools are applicable, then shape it by hands only.
C) “Yuangu”: The first step is also similar to that of “Pinggu” making, and the difference is that each side and corner should not be ground to be an arc shape at the moment also. The second step is also heightening and molding. The height is proportional to the size of the letter. The steps are the same as the making of “Jiangu”. Only the tool is different. Use a rounded knife instead.
